The human brain, a marvel of biological engineering, is the epicentre of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It’s a complex network of billions of neurons, each communicating and interacting with countless others, forming intricate pathways that dictate our every move. The brain’s structure and function are intimately tied to our behaviour. Our emotions, decision-making abilities, social interactions, and even our personalities are all shaped by this remarkable organ. Understanding the brain’s workings not only unravels the mysteries of human behaviour but also opens avenues for addressing behavioural disorders and improving mental health.
Embark on an exciting journey with us in this two-part workshop, where we will explore the complexities of the brain, its structure, and its functions.
· The Brain: The brain is the central organ of the human nervous system, responsible for processing sensory information, regulating bodily functions, and enabling cognition, emotion, and behaviour.
· Parts of The Brain and Their Functions: The brain is divided into three main parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem.
· Brain Formation from Conception to Adulthood: Brain development begins shortly after conception with the formation of the neural tube. During gestation, neurons proliferate, migrate, and form connections. After birth, the brain continues to grow and change through processes like myelination and synaptic pruning.
· Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Impact on the Brain: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction, can have profound effects on the developing brain. They can disrupt neurodevelopment, leading to changes in brain structure and function that increase the risk for health problems, including mental illness, in adulthood.
